This position is responsible for helping patients and patient families cope with the stress of hospitalization by assessing patient psychosocial and! developmental needs during hospitalization, and developing a plan for the facilitation of therapeutic interventions. This position works with patients with lower acuity or less complex cases; exceptions made at director's discretion.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Assess and Document Patient Psychosocial and Developmental Needs:
Document patient's developmental needs, coping and plan to facilitate mastery in patient medical records.
Recognize subtle changes in patient psychosocial assessment and initiates care plans in collaboration with other members of the healthcare team.
Develop Plan for and Facilitate Therapeutic Intervention:
Facilitate coping assessment, individual and group support, procedural and surgical preparation and support, medical play, and developmental screening and infant education.
Coordinate and initiate involvement in appropriate community activities.
Prepare siblings for visi! tation and anticipated events related to treatment, and provid! e sibling support.
Provide psychosocial support and opportunities for continued coping and normal growth and development, including, but not limited to, post-hospital interventions, school re-entry programs, school referrals, ECI referrals, and various referrals to community organizations.
Serve as a Liaison Between Patient/Families and Other Healthcare Team Members:
Develop and maintain effective working relationships with members of the health care team
Initiate support to parents/caregivers regarding developmental needs and interventions for their child. Serve as a patient/family advocate.
Guide other healthcare team members in problem-solving for patients/families.
Student Supervision Responsibilities:
Child Life Specialists with two or more years' experience may supervise, teach and lead child life student groups. May also supervise child life, jump start, and other students.
They will serve as a! role model and mentor for child life peers and other members of the healthcare team.
Formal Mentorship Responsibilities:
Child Life Specialists with two or more years' experience may provide education to hospital-wide staff and serve on departmental committees. They will actively participate in the child life mentor program for novice CLS. May also serve as a representative on regional and national sub-specialty committees.
Qualifications
Education
Bachelor's degree in Child Life, Human Development and Family Studies, Counseling, Child Development, Therapeutic Recreation or Child Psychology required.
Master's Degree preferred
Licenses and Certification
Child Life Specialist Professional Certification or ability to obtain certification within eighteen months of hire date required
Experience
No previous experience required.

Must possess the abili! ty to communicate with others in a clear, understandable and profession! al manner on the phone and in person; and the demonstrated use of good written and verbal communication skills
Must possess the ability to interact with peers, executives, patient families and other vendors in a manner that represents Childrenâs positively
Must possess the ability and willingness to advocate for patients and patient families, and serve as a role model and resource person for the Child Life peers and health care professionals throughout the organization
Must be able to utilize and guide other healthcare professionals in creative problem solving of patient care issues
Must possess the ability to learn and apply new information, knowledge and experiences in a timely manner
Must possess the ability to be flexible and adaptable to change
Must possess the ability to work on multiple tasks and projects and to prioritize
Must possess the ability to train, assist and/or mentor employees with less exper! ience, skill or tenure
Physical Demands
Light - Exerting up to 20 lbs. occasionally, 10 lbs. frequently, or negligible amounts constantly and may require walking or standing to a significant degree.
