The Manager-Tax Audits is a specialized role at the Company that includes management of the federal audit personnel (2) and daily interface with the IRS team on site permanently at the headquarters. More importantly, ! this role requires a versatile tax professional to identify tax savings opportunities that can be gleaned through either the compliance, audit or planning process and be responsible for the special projects that mine the opportunities. The position requires constant monitoring of tax developments in all areas that the Company's business impacts and extensive partnering with business unit personnel to implement successful tax savings opportunities. Position requires energetic self starter that can operate without extensive supervision
Key Roles & Responsibilities Other duties may be assigned. Directly or through others, the incumbent will:
Identify tax opportunities that are not currently maximized and undertake special projects necessary to mine the opportunities.
Be a "tax savings" thought leader and idea generator for the federal tax controversy group and mentor other team members through special project work.
Assist with the management! and delivery of documentation to federal tax auditors.
Help create an atmosphere of trust with the federal tax auditors and IRS case management.
Maintain a current working knowledge of all IRS practice and procedures requirements.
Drive significant technology efforts associated with with audit activities (Tax Data Warehouse, Electronic Discovery, BNA Audit Analyzer, Federal Tax Depreciation for specialized technical issues) and interface effectively with Company's IT to maximize audit results.
Interface with all tax compliance groups (federal, property, state, environmental pollution control) to maximize the Company's tax credits and exemptions.
Lead special tax projects that arise within department budget and timeframes.
Assist Director, Federal Tax Controversy, in identifying strategic initiatives and achieving promised KPI's for federal tax controversy.
Assist Director Business Planning & Financial Reporting in capturing and reporting tax department KPIs.
Insu! re SOX compliance for federal tax controversy and adherence to all Company audit policies and procedures
Education, Experience, & Skill Requirements
Bachelor degree, accounting preferred. JD or Masters in Taxation strongly preferred for this role.
Major accounting firm experience and heavy federal tax return preparation experience required.
Solid technical skills in federal income taxation as applicable to energy companies.
Must be strong self starter and comfortable with idea generation without road map.
Needs good project management skills on both budgeting with internal and external resources and adherence to deadlines.
Good analytic ability, sound written and verbal communication of technical matters and versatility to apply complex tax concepts to business problems or operations.
Actively learning the business and willing to build relationships with business units based on delivering value and with! tax auditors based on credibility and commitment.
