The purpose of this job is to apply and remove all types of casts and splints. Typically a person in this position will have at least two (2) years full-time work experience in ! a hospital, clinic, or office, or as an independent contractor working directly in the care of the orthopedic patient.
This position is Monday - Friday from 8 am - 5 pm. Ortho tech works independently without supervision and will take call on nights and weekends.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Cast/Splint application and removal to patients from newborns to adulthood related to prescribed treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and deformities. Assists Orthopedic providers as needed in inpatient, emergency department and outpatient care setting.
Assists in the teaching, instructing, and mentoring new orthopedic techs in all aspects of the orthopedic Tech role: cast/splint application and removal, patient care documentation, charge entry, inventory management and supply ordering, JCAHO preparedness, quality and safety.
Various administrative duties such as maintaining a safe environment, patient care documentation, charge entry, d! eveloping call schedules, inventory management, and ordering s! upplies.
Qualifications
Education
High school diploma or equivalent required
Licenses & certifications
Certified by the National Board of Certification for Orthopaedic Technologists (NBCOT) preferred
American Heart Association CPR/BLS for the Healthcare Provider Certification required.
Experience
Minimum 2-3 years of job related experience
Specific knowledge, skills, and abilities
Ability to articulate descriptions of orthopaedic conditions based on the understanding of anatomical structures and their relationships with one another Ability to apply, adjust, and remove all common orthopaedic devices, using a manual or standard practice as a guide
Ability to perform basic casting, include the application of SPICA cast
Knowledge of theory and application of skin or skeletal traction
Knowledge of the proper application os aseptic techniques in dressing change, removal! of sutures or staples and in setting up surgical field.
Ability to interpret simple fractures and dislocations on X-ray films
Ability to perform in an operating room environment as first and second assistant or scrub technician under the direct supervision of a surgeon
Ability to communiate effectively with providers, clinic staff, patients and families
Physical demands
Heavy - Exerting 60-100 lbs. occasionally, 25-60 lbs. frequently, or up to 10-20 constantly.
